Jet have been used as ornamental stone since immemorial times. The oldest sample of jet ever found is dated around 15,000 BC, it is a pendant found in the Las Caldas Cave (Oviedo, Asturias, Spain). Jet from Asturias had an important use in Middle Age when it was used as a typical stone for amulets for piligrims in the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). Artisanal carvers are still working this material nowadays. Together with English jet from Whitby, it is considered as a best quality jet in the world. The origin for this jet are Protopinaceae and Araucaria trees of Jurassic age.
